One of the best parts of planning family reunions with your aging parent is the opportunity to make memories with your loved ones. Spending quality time with family members, particularly those you might not be able to see very often, is a tremendous boost to mental and emotional health and can create meaningful moments to cherish even after your caregiver journey comes to an end. Making these meaningful memories can also create fantastic activities to enjoy together during the family reunions.
Let these creative ways to make me feel memories during a family reunion or gathering inspire you to make your own memories with your senior:
-Take out pictures of family members who will be at the reunion, and try to recreate them. For example, if you have a picture of several cousins sitting together, position them in the same way and take the picture again. Put these pictures alongside each other in a new scrapbook, and include the names of the people in the picture, as well as the years both, were taken.
-Create an interactive family tree by using a large poster board or piece of white butcher paper to draw the shape of a tree with several branches. Work together to fill it out, allowing family members in attendance to put their signature under their name. Make it even more personal by adding leaves to the tree using thumbprints.
-Invest in a small Polaroid style camera. These contemporary versions of the classic camera print out miniature pictures quickly, making them ideal for capturing instant memories. Put this camera somewhere easily accessible and encourage family members to take pictures together to add to a large display board.
-Cut out equal-sized squares of pre-washed cotton fabric and provide fabric markers so your family can design custom quilt squares. After the gathering, work with your parent to create a family quilt.
How can home care services help?
If you have been looking for a way to enhance your senior’s quality of life, address their needs and challenges, and support your own well-being during your caregiver journey, home care may be the ideal solution.
