Personal Care Services

Most personal care is provided by Personal Care Assistants or (PCA’s), which is the term used in our Licensing Rules. But you may also hear other terms used such as, Certified Nurses Aide (CNA) , Nurses Aide (NA) , Nursing Assistant (NA), Personal Care Aide (PCA), or Home Health Aide (HHA) to describe similar skill sets. Do No Be Confused - when working for Always-Care this skill level, is called, “ The Personal Care Assistant (PCA)”. She/he is an important member of the Always-Care Nursing Service Team. The PCA's function is to help the patient regain self-confidence and usefulness when possible, and to support, assist and reassure the patient.

The PCA provides the patient with hands-on assistance in ambulation and transfer, bathing, toileting, grooming, shaving, dental care, dressing and eating, including proper nutrition, home management, housekeeping task, mother-child care, and medically related activities, including the taking of vital signs if instructed to do so by the nursing supervisor. A PCA cannot administer medications, but may remind the patient to do so. In addition she/he may provide transport and escort services to doctors appointments and on other outings. The PCA works cooperatively with the patient/client, family, the Always-Care office Nurse supervisors and the doctor. A Physician's order is not required!

PCA's may also provide “Private Duty” Assistance for a Patient in a Facility. She/he may assist the geriatric, convalescent, or post-operative patient according to the patient/family wishes. PCA's work either by the hour in both private residences and in facilities, and by the Live-In Day (24 hour period) in private residences only.
